A Musical Odyssey Concert at the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton - Thursday March 5th
What a wonderful evening our Y3 singers had this evening at the Mayflower Theatre. They attended their sound check after school and then took part in the concert and can proudly say they have all sung on the Mayflower Stage!
The smiles on the children's faces during the performance (and their families afterwards!) were wonderful. There was a lot of awe and wonder and it was a magical moment.
A Musical Odyssey rehearsal
On Saturday 29th February a group of very excited children met together at the Mayflower terminal with 400 other children to rehearse ready for the concert at the Mayflower Theatre. We had a fantastic morning. Top highlights included meeting and talking to the composer of the Mayflower 400 song (our favourite) Jo Downs and seeing so many orchestral instruments! We loved spotting instruments from the four families and even met the piccolo player (as we could hear it from the back of the room!)

Mayflower 400 - Guided Listening with James Redwood - Thursday 27th February 2020
Today a group of Y3 composers were lucky enough to hear their musical ideas come to life. In September James Redwood (composer with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra) worked with our Y3 children to gather musical ideas based on the Mayflower voyage. He then wrote a piece of music from all our ideas which children in 4 secondary schools have been learning. This afternoon we visited Bitterne Park School to hear the final rehearsal of our piece along with composer, James Redwood. We were astounded to hear our ideas in the piece and see how they had shaped the whole sound. It was a magical afternoon listening and identifying each fragment we had composed and then listening to their overall effect together.
Y2 Recorder project
Y2 have been learning the recorder this half term and have been working really hard. The children are playing really confidently and working hard on their tone. It's great to see so many children using the recorder and rhythms to compose and think about how they show pitch in their compositions. We finished our learning with a concert today - they sounded brilliant. Well done Y2!
Next half term there will be a recorder lunch time club starting up each Thursday for those who wish to carry on.
Y3 Benjamin Britten - Storm
As part of our Mayflower 400 project Y3 have been listening to 'The Storm' by Benjamin Britten. We heard the pirates and sea monsters in the music and how calm it became when the sun came up. We used the main theme as our chorus for our music and then composed our own parts. Have a listen to our final version!
Little Voices - February 2020
Our Little Voices choir are working hard ready for the Southampton Music Festival in March. As part of their pirate singing they have been having fun with the 'scury pirate' song. Listen out for our 3 parts! Fantastic listening from some of our youngest singers.
In2music concert - Wednesday 12th February 2020
Wow! What a morning!!! The hall was buzzing this morning with excitement and music; Y4 and the Y5/6 orchestra sounded fantastic. It was wonderful to hear the progress that the children have made so far on their instruments and to hear them playing so confidently together as an ensemble. Thank you so much to all the parents who were able to join us - it was great to see so many of you. We were so proud of our orchestra in their first performance. Thank you for all the support at home encouraging your child to play and reminding them to bring their instrument back every Wednesday.
Young Voices at the O2 Arena, London - Thursday 6th February
We had the most AMAZING day at the O2. The children sang their hearts out and danced their way through the day - they were simply brilliant. There was a lot of excitement on the coach when we got our first peak of the O2 Arena. We had lunch when we arrived before taking our seats ready to perform. Our choir were so lucky that we had seats directly behind the stage and could see the band members playing. Throughout the afternoon David Lawrence, the conductor, rehearsed each song with us. We were really excited meeting Ruti (winner of The Voice) who wrote a song specifically for us to sing with her. The Shires were amazing live and Tony Hadley arrived on stage singing 'Gold'! An absolute highlight was meeting Andy Instone and dancing with Urban Strides ourselves. After a looooong rehearsal we finally made it to our tea break to get ourselves re-energised ready for the concert.
Finally our parents started to arrive and we did frantic waving for them to spot us across the arena. At 7pm the magic happened, the lights went down, we turned our torches on and the arena became electric. The concert itself was just brilliant - our children were superb and smiled throughout the whole thing.
The children were still singing as we left London.... :)
Thank you so much to all the parents for their support and all the super star singers we took with us; you have been fantastic all year and I have loved singing with you all every week.
Southern Pro Musica Children's Concert - Thursday 30th January
Y4 were entertained at the Southern Pro Musica concert today at Central Hall, Southampton. They loved watched the musicians play and were surprised when they spotted only two trumpets in the orchestra! It was wonderful watching them conducting and being immersed in the live music.
Orchestra - February 2020
Our fantastic instrumentalists have met twice this half term as an orchestra and today performed for their families and Y4 for the first time. We are so proud of how hard the children have worked and how fantastic they sound. They are all readying from notation without any help now and we are so impressed. I can't wait to hear how you sound by the summer concert!
Y1 in space - February 2020
Y1 have been busy exploring space this half term. In music we have been reading notation using the astronauts who have been to the moon. We have composed music about the journey into space and even tried playing an ostinato along with our song. We have had a lot of fun!
